Amazilia yucatanensis inhabits riparian and dry forests, and scrublands in the southern Texas (USA), eastern Mexico, and throughout the Yucatan Peninsula (Map). This is a medium-sized hummingbird (length 10-11 cm, weight 3-5 g), metallic olive-green above and cinnamon-buff below; the tail is rufous. The bill is straight and slender. This species build nests in forks and horizontal branches of small trees or shrubs, 1-7 m above the ground. The clutch is 2 white eggs. Buff-bellied Hummingbirds feed on nectar of a variety of flowers, and insects. They are territorial and chase other hummingbirds from preferred feeding locations.
